Strip Paintings are digital prints by the artist Gerhard Richter. The works are composed of thin horizontal strips in many different colours. Richter began his series of Strip Paintings in 2010, although despite their name they have no actual paint on their surface. Richter cuts a pixel-wide wedge from one of his paintings from 1990. Then, using image editing software, he duplicates each strip thousands of times, producing striated patterns that look like textiles. In other pieces, the repetition of color snippets create raucous optical effects, recalling fractal patterns. The digital prints are laminated onto aluminium behind a thin layer of Perspex. It is significant, however, that Richter refers to the Strip works as paintings, since this indicates a widening idea of what a painting might be in a digital age.
